obscured by 10:30/11:00, signaling the ideal time to depart and head back. Clouds begin to clear

again from 15:00, and sundowner trips can be scheduled to run from 15:30 upto drop off at 18:15.

SPECIAL OFFER - LAST MINUTE MT. MERU SUNDOWNER

stationed at our Usa River base, there are frequent opportunities, though they can only be confirmed

FLIGHT INFORMATION

THE FLIGHT

Mount Meru, Africa’s fourth-highest peak, dominates the Arusha National Park landscape and is one

of East Africa's largest stratovolcanoes. Your flight will take you over the ancient afromontane forest,

where giant Podocarpus trees cling to impossibly steep slopes. As we circle the mountain clockwise,

we ascend above the treeline, drifting over a wonderland of giant heather clothed in hanging moss.

Higher up, the vegetation gives way to high-altitude scree slopes, eroded into near-vertical runoff

gullies. As you gaze down at Arusha Town, nearly 10,000 feet below, the extreme angle of the

volcano’s outer slope will leave you breathless. Mt. Meru’s summit, “Socialist Peak,” hangs

precariously over its vast caldera, which we reveal as we follow the curve of the summit ridge. Rising

a kilometer above its base, the pyramid-shaped Ash Cone towers over the caldera, offering a

perfect landing spot - perhaps Africa’s most stunning picnic location. After enjoying a delicious

breakfast, we take off again to explore the vertical walls of the caldera, as we descend to land at

the Engare Nanyuki River for an enchanting walk through a fairytale landscape.
